{Recipe} Heart Shaped Pop Tarts
Living as a foreigner in a far away land is glorious, but it doesn’t come without its challenges. Take food for example: I am from America, the land of plenty, and the land of unending food choices! The grocery stores are massive and every isle lined with temptation. One of those temptations is Pop Tarts. Sugary pastries with the yummiest of fillings and the perfect icing on top. I grew up on these babies. Now that I look back, they probably weren’t the healthiest of breakfast options, but they were, nonetheless, wonderful.

I have been in South Africa for 5 years now and my little American food cravings STILL consistently overtake my being. I remembered seeing a recipe for a homemade version of Pop Tarts recently so I decided to look it up again and try it out. My kids wanted to help, so I thought I would mix it up a bit and let them cut the pastry into heart shapes- they loved this!
I found my recipe over at Smitten Kitchen and just adapted it by cutting the pastry pieces into hearts. You could use any shape you want really! The pastry doesn’t change shape during baking, so you can get creative with crazy shapes and the end product will still look great. They are still not the healthiest of options, but probably healthier than the processed version of the American grocery store aisles.
We used the cut offs to make tiny heart shaped pastries (no fillings, just single layer pastries dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Later we got the idea to put Nutella between 2 of them to make the yummiest little heart sandwiches ever! Also a great gifting snack, just package in a pretty jar and finish with a ribbon :) Hope this inspires you!
